KISUMU, KENYA – June 23, 2025 – A vital partnership between Community Initiatives Support Services and Nelumbo Charity is set to embark on an ambitious project: the restoration of the Nyamgun River in Seme Central Ward, Kisumu County. This initiative aims to address pressing environmental degradation and climate change impacts, starting with robust community engagement.

The Nyamgun River, a lifeline for the Karambira community, has faced increasing threats from environmental degradation. Recognizing the urgent need for action, Community Initiatives Support Services and Nelumbo Charity have joined forces to restore the river's ecological health and ensure its long-term sustainability.

"Our vision for the Nyamgun River is one of revival and resilience," says Robert Owino, Director Community Initiatives Support Services. "We believe that true environmental change begins at the grassroots, with the people who depend most on these natural resources."

The project kicked off with a highly successful initial meeting on climate and environmental degradation with the Karambira community. Adopting a participatory and exploratory approach, the session focused on a Participatory Assessment of Climate and Disaster Risks. This collaborative method empowered community members to actively contribute their local knowledge and experiences. A highlight of the meeting was the community's successful drawing of a detailed map of the river, meticulously outlining its source, existing hazards, and the severity of these threats. This invaluable input will guide the restoration efforts. This community-led mapping exercise provides a critical foundation for the upcoming phases of the Nyamgun River restoration project. It highlights a shared commitment to protecting the environment and mitigating the effects of climate change in Kisumu County.
